Why Dieting Can Leave You Constipated — A Doctor's Column on the Gut That Slows Down When You Eat Less

The scale is going down, but you feel bloated and it's day three without a bowel movement. Why constipation shows up during a diet, and what to change before you reach for a laxative.

요약limda k-medical clinic (경희림다한의원) is in Marine City, Haeundae, Busan, next to Park Hyatt Busan, and plans weight management around body composition and pulse diagnosis; appointments are prioritized and walk-ins are welcome, weekdays 10:00–19:00 and Saturdays 09:00–17:00. Constipation during a diet often comes from eating less food, fat and water at the same time, plus irregular mealtimes, so the gut loses both the material and the signal it needs to move. The first step is to put vegetables, water and a fixed breakfast time back in place.

limda k-medical clinic (경희림다한의원) is next to Park Hyatt Busan in Marine City, Haeundae. We plan weight management around body composition and pulse diagnosis, and walk-ins are welcome. We are open weekdays 10:00–19:00 and Saturdays 09:00–17:00, about a 10-minute walk from Dongbaek Station. For a first consultation, including an InBody 970 measurement, allow about an hour and a half.

limda k-medical clinic (경희림다한의원) is a 10-minute walk from Dongbaek Station (Busan Metro Line 2), and our doctors and all staff speak English, and a Chinese-speaking doctor is on site — no interpreter booking needed.

About two weeks into a diet, we often hear this: "My weight is down, but I haven't been to the toilet in three days." Eating less and passing less seems natural enough, but left alone it brings bloating and rougher skin, and it can end up being the reason people give up on the diet altogether.

Why constipation happens on a diet

  1. Less material — when you eat less, there is simply less for the gut to move along. This is especially true when vegetables and whole grains drop out.
  2. Too little fat — with almost no oil in the diet, the gut has a harder time moving smoothly.
  3. Not enough water — the fluid that used to come in with soups and food goes down.
  4. The signal fades — the gut starts moving once you eat breakfast. Skip breakfast, or eat at a different time every day, and that signal weakens.

What to change before laxatives

  1. A plate of vegetables at every meal — seasoned greens, leafy wraps, seaweed
  2. A spoonful of good fat — perilla oil, olive oil, nuts
  3. Water — a glass of lukewarm water when you get up, then small sips often through the day
  4. A fixed breakfast time — and 10 minutes after eating to sit on the toilet
  5. Walking — 10–15 minutes after meals

Laxatives can help in a pinch, but leaning on them for long can weaken the gut's own ability to move.

If two weeks of changes make no difference

That is not a lack of willpower. It is a sign that your body cannot keep up with the way you are doing things now. If you have stayed uncomfortable despite these changes, that is exactly the area we look at closely.

The Limdiet 28-day approach

We do not get weight off by starving you. We measure body composition with the InBody 970 and read your condition through pulse diagnosis, then set meal times and meal order first. For people whose gut is sensitive or easily blocked, herbal medicine is prepared with that constitution in mind, in 15-day batches, and every 15 days we check bowel habits and how you feel before prescribing again.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Do I need an appointment?

No. Appointments are prioritized, and walk-ins are welcome on weekdays 10:00–19:00 and Saturdays 09:00–17:00. Walk-ins are seen between booked patients, so there may be a short wait.

Q. Does diet herbal medicine cause constipation?

It is not prepared that way. We check your bowel habits every 15 days and adjust the prescription accordingly.

Q. Am I constipated if I don't go once a day?

Not necessarily. Going comfortably even once every three days can be fine. What matters is straining and a lingering feeling of not being finished.

Q. Can I have a diet consultation on a Saturday?

Yes. On Saturdays, 09:00–17:00, we do the InBody measurement, consultation and prescription.
