"K-medical" is a word you will see on travel sites and clinic signs across Korea. This guide explains what it usually means, what a visit includes, and what to check as a foreign visitor.

Who practices Korean medicine?
Korean medicine doctors (한의사) are licensed medical professionals in Korea. They complete a six-year university program and pass a national licensing exam. Korean medicine clinics are regulated by Korean medical law, just like other clinics.
What a visit usually includes
- Consultation — symptoms, sleep, digestion, past treatments. Many clinics also check pulse and body constitution.
- Treatment — commonly acupuncture, pharmacopuncture (herbal-extract injections at acupoints), moxibustion and cupping.
- Herbal medicine (optional) — a prescription made for you, usually as pouches you can take on a trip.
Common reasons visitors go
- Back, neck or shoulder pain after long flights
- Jet lag and poor sleep
- Facial acupuncture and skin care
- Women's health, such as period pain or menopause
- General check-ups focused on healthy aging
Tips for foreign visitors
- Language: ask before you go whether the doctor consults in your language or uses an interpreter.
- Insurance: you do not need Korean health insurance. Ask for an itemized English receipt and medical certificate if you plan to claim travel insurance.
- Herbs and customs: check your home country's rules before carrying or shipping herbal medicine.
- Timing: many clinics are closed on Sundays and public holidays. Check Saturday hours.
