Why Period Pain Gets Worse When the Weather Turns Cold — A Female Korean Medicine Doctor in Busan

Period pain that was manageable in summer and needs painkillers again by November. Why cold weather changes it, and what to do in the week before.

요약limda k-medical clinic (경희림다한의원) is next to Park Hyatt Busan in Marine City, Haeundae, all three doctors are women who treat in English, and you can walk in without an appointment. Period pain often worsens in cold weather because circulation around the lower abdomen and pelvis slows and the muscles tense; keeping the abdomen and lower back warm and cutting cold drinks in the week before a period is the first step.

Period pain in cold weather, Korean medicine in Busan

limda k-medical clinic (경희림다한의원) is next to Park Hyatt Busan in Marine City, Haeundae, all three of our doctors are women who treat in English, and you can walk in without an appointment. We are open weekdays 10:00–19:00 and Saturdays 09:00–17:00, about a 10-minute walk from Dongbaek Station. We are in Haeundae-gu on the east side of Busan, not in the Nampo-dong or Jagalchi area of Jung-gu. Measurements take about 15 minutes, and your first visit, including LIMDA AcuNap, takes about 60–90 minutes.

limda k-medical clinic (경희림다한의원) is across from the Suyeong Bay Yachting Center in Marine City, Haeundae, and the clinic is registered with Busan City for international patients and holds an MOU with the Korea Ocean Business Corporation.

Every autumn, more women come in with the same sentence: "Summer was fine, and now I'm back on painkillers." If nothing else has changed but the season, we look first at how the body responds to cold.

Why cold weather makes period pain worse

  1. Circulation to the pelvis — in the cold, the body protects its core by reducing blood flow to the hands, feet and lower abdomen. A cold, tight uterus area makes cramps feel stronger.
  2. Muscle tension — shoulders rise in the cold, and so do the muscles of the lower back and pelvis. If your period pain spreads into your back, this matters.
  3. Less movement — cooler days mean more sitting and less walking, and the pelvis circulates as much as you walk.

What to do in the week before your period

  1. Keep the lower abdomen and lower back warm — alternate a heat patch below the navel and on the lower back.
  2. Cut cold drinks and iced coffee, at least for that week.
  3. Walk 20 minutes a day, even on heavy days.
  4. Keep your feet covered indoors if your hands and feet run cold.

What we do

LIMDA AcuNap in a private room: acupuncture and electro-acupuncture on points of the lower abdomen, lower back and legs, pharmacopuncture where useful, and infrared warmth over the abdomen. If your hands and feet run cold and you tire before and after your period, we may prescribe herbal medicine 15 days at a time, which can also be shipped abroad.
