Your First Visit to a Korean Medicine Clinic — What to Expect
Pulse reading, a long conversation, and a plan built around your body — a first visit to LIMDA is different from a quick prescription stop. Here is the step-by-step of your first hour, in English.
Booking a clinic in a foreign language can feel intimidating. Here is exactly what happens, so nothing surprises you.
Step 1 — Conversation first (15-25 min)
Your doctor asks about sleep, digestion, energy through the day, stress, and your health history — in English, directly. Korean medicine reads patterns across the whole body, so the questions go wider than a single symptom.
Step 2 — Examination (5-10 min)
Pulse reading at the wrist, a look at the tongue, gentle abdominal palpation, and checks of posture and skin tone. These traditional examinations are combined with modern measurements such as body composition when relevant.
Step 3 — Explanation and plan
The doctor explains what pattern your body is showing and proposes a plan: acupuncture sessions, a personalized herbal prescription (bo-yak), lifestyle adjustments, or a combination. Costs are explained before anything begins, and it is completely fine to take time to decide.
Step 4 — First treatment (optional, 20-30 min)
If appropriate, your first acupuncture session can happen the same day. Most people describe it as calm, almost meditative — many fall asleep on the table.
What to bring
A list of medications and supplements you take, any recent health check-up results, and comfortable clothing. If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, tell your doctor first.
Q. Does acupuncture hurt? A. The needles are hair-thin. Most points feel like a light tap or a dull warmth; strong pain is not normal and you should say so.
Q. Can I eat before my visit? A. A light meal 1-2 hours before is ideal. Avoid arriving very hungry or very full. Q. Will herbal medicine interact with my medication? A. Bring your medication list — your prescription is designed around it, and timing is adjusted to avoid overlap. Q. How do I pay? A. Cards and major payment methods are accepted, and English receipts are available for insurance.
