Pulse and Constitution Diagnosis in Busan — What Happens at Your First Korean Medicine Visit

Many visitors tell me the same thing: "I want to try Korean medicine, but I don't know what actually happens in the room." The honest answer is that the first visit is mostly reading — reading your pulse, your daily rhythms, and your constitution — before anything is prescribed. This is what that looks like at our clinic next to Park Hyatt Busan.

Step 1 — The conversation (about 15 minutes)

Before touching your wrist, the doctor asks about the things a lab report rarely covers: when you fall asleep and when you wake, how your digestion feels after meals, bowel habits, hands and feet temperature, energy across the day, and for women, the menstrual cycle. Travelers often add jet lag and long flights. None of these are diseases, but together they show where your body is working too hard.

Step 2 — Pulse diagnosis (maek-jin)

The doctor places three fingers on the radial artery of each wrist and reads the pulse at three positions and three depths. What we note is not just speed: it is strength, depth, width and rhythm. A pulse that is thin and deep tells a different story from one that is tight and fast. Pulse reading does not replace blood tests or imaging; it answers a different question — how your whole system is coping right now.

Step 3 — Constitution analysis (Sasang medicine)

In 1894, Lee Je-ma described four constitutions — Taeyang, Taeeum, Soyang and Soeum — and argued that the same symptom can need a different treatment in a different person. We combine a structured questionnaire with physical findings and pulse to estimate your constitution. It shapes everything after: which foods tend to suit you, how you respond to stress, and how herbal prescriptions are built.

Step 4 — Modern measurements

To put numbers beside the traditional reading, we use body composition analysis (muscle, body water, visceral fat), EEG-based stress measurement, and a 3D facial scan where useful. All are short and non-invasive. Seeing traditional and modern findings side by side is what we mean by modern Korean medicine.

Step 5 — The explanation

The doctor then explains the findings in English, as one picture: what is tired, what is overworking, and what she would suggest — or not suggest. You can stop at the assessment. If treatment makes sense, options include AcuNap (acupuncture with pharmacopuncture, electro-acupuncture and infrared heat, 20 quiet minutes) and one-to-one herbal medicine in 15-day units, packed in travel pouches or shipped internationally.

From the clinic

A Taiwanese visitor recently came in "just to know my constitution." After the reading, she said it was the first time anyone had explained her tiredness as a pattern rather than a single number.

Practical notes

Appointment only; a first visit takes about 40–60 minutes. English with the doctor directly; Japanese or Chinese with an interpreter if booked 48 hours ahead. We are a registered medical institution for foreign patients in Busan (Reg. No. M-2026-02-07-709023). Costs are listed on our non-covered fee schedule. If you have sudden weakness, chest pain or high fever, please go to a hospital first.
