What Sasang constitutional medicine is

In 1894 the Korean physician Lee Je-ma described four constitutions and argued that the same symptom can call for a different treatment in a different person. The four are:

  1. Taeyang (Taeyangin)
  2. Taeeum (Taeeumin)
  3. Soyang (Soyangin)
  4. Soeum (Soeumin)

Each describes a pattern: how the body is built, how digestion and sleep tend to behave, how a person responds to stress, and which foods and herbs tend to suit them. It is a part of Korean medicine that developed in Korea and is taught in Korean medical universities.

How the diagnosis is made

A constitution is not read from one test. The doctor puts three sources together.

  1. A structured questionnaire — body shape, appetite, digestion, sleep, sweating, temperature preference, temperament.
  2. Physical findings — build, posture, the face, the voice, the skin.
  3. Pulse diagnosis — three fingers on each wrist, read at three positions and three depths for strength, depth, width and rhythm.

From these the doctor estimates your constitution and explains why, in plain English.

What we measure alongside it

To put numbers beside the traditional reading, we add modern measurements. All are short and non-invasive.

  1. Body composition with the InBody 970 — muscle, fat, visceral fat and body water
  2. EEG-based stress measurement — the balance of tension and relaxation
  3. 3D facial analysis — left-right balance and contour; the report can be issued in 20 languages

Seeing the constitution and the measurements side by side is what we mean by modern Korean medicine.

What the result is used for

  1. Food — which foods tend to suit you and which tend to weigh on you
  2. Daily rhythm — sleep, exercise and how you recover from stress
  3. Treatment — how acupuncture is planned and how a herbal prescription is built for you

If you only want to know your constitution, you can stop at the assessment. If treatment makes sense, options include LIMDA AcuNap acupuncture and one-to-one herbal medicine in 15-day units, packed for travel or shipped internationally.

What you take home

You leave with a written report in English covering the constitution reading and the measurements. Many visitors keep it as a reference for food and daily habits after they return home.

How long it takes

The measurements take about 15 minutes. Your first visit takes about 60–90 minutes, including consultation, assessment and treatment.
